About North Notts CAMRA

The North Nottinghamshire (shortened to North Notts) CAMRA Branch was formed in 1979 and currently has around 280 members.

The North Notts CAMRA Branch area stretches south as far as Laxton and High Marnham, north as far as Misson, Haxey Gate (North of Misterton) and West Stockwith, west as far as Worksop and its suburbs and east as far as the River Trent. High Marnham and West Stockwith are both at the side of the Trent. Retford is roughly in the centre of the Branch area.

There are currently 143 or so pubs and clubs listed in the area, not all sell real ale though, and the Branch has 14 entries in the 2023 Good Beer Guide.

In the 2024 Good Beer Guide there are 2 entries in Worksop, 4 in Retford and 8 in the villages. Branch members contribute to the selection of the pubs for the Good Beer Guide through beer scoring on What Pub on the NBSS (National Beer Scoring System) and by voting at the Good Beer Guide selection evening which is usually held in February.

Branch members vote for a town and a village Pub of the Season (Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn) and also a town and a village Pub of the Year.

The Mallard (left)at Worksop railway station has been voted, by the members, North Notts CAMRA Town Pub of the Year for 2024

The Grey Horses Inn (below) at Carlton in Lindrick has been voted, by the members, North Notts CAMRA Village Pub of the Year for 2024

There are 7 micro breweries operating in the North Notts area, Ticking Clock Brewery at Shireoaks being the latest. Yes I am bias, but they do brew some cracking beers, some of which have been award winning. Pheasantry Best Bitter won its category at the 2015 CAMRA Great British Beer Festival, a brilliant achievement, only one step from being Champion Beer of Britain 2015. A lot of our breweries have beers in various pubs, some even have their own pubs, and their beers are at many beer festivals. Keep an eye out for them.

Branch Meetings are usually bi-monthly and usually on the first Saturday. The branch have the meetings on Saturdays because members asked for the change to Saturdays and it sometimes happens were the Branch Meeting is combined with a Saturday social. The AGM, when Branch Officials are elected, is at present in April. We do try to move the Branch Meetings around the area but not all pubs are suitable and sometimes not available and also transport has to be considered. Branch Meetings usually start at 12.00-12.15 and all members and non members are welcome but non members cannot vote at the meetings.

Emails are sent out to North Notts members that receive emails regarding dates and venues for forthcoming Branch Meetings and they are also listed on the website under Diary and on North Notts CAMRA Facebook . Branch Meeting minutes are posted on the website in the Members’ Area (you need to be a CAMRA member to access them).

The Branch has regular Social Events. Everyone is welcome on the Socials, even if the person is not a CAMRA member. Often members or member’s partners and friends will meet up part way through a Social. Details of Social Events are sent out via email, listed on the website under Diary, on North Notts CAMRA Facebook and presently are posted on the notice boards in the Brew Shed and Beer Under The Clock at Retford and the Mallard and Fuggles Chapter One at Worksop.
