Campaign for Real Ale

Campaign for Real Ale

Hucknall and Back 25.03.2023.

Originally this was North Notts CAMRA Christmas Jumper trip in December 2022 but due to train disruption the event didn't happen until March 2023. Travelling was by train and on foot.

The pubs visited were:-

The Mallard Worksop

The Railway Inn Mansfield

The Baker and Bear Hucknall

The Beer Shack Hucknall

The Hideout Hucknall

The Byron's Rest Hucknall

The Station Hotel Hucknall

The Pit Newstead Newstead

The Mallard Worksop

Those travelling from Retford caught the 9:51 train arriving at Worksop at 10:02, very convenient because we were meeting in the Mallard on Worksop railway station from 10:00 onwards. Christmas Jumpers to the fore for some.

The Mallard was formerly the Worksop station buffet and the entrance is from the railway station car park. The pub offers a warm welcome and four changing real ales, usually a dark beer and a bitter are available, two ciders and a selection of foreign bottled beers. The main room is not very big and the use of mobile phone calls are barred but the conversation can be lively. There is a downstairs room for events such as the four beer festivals the pub holds each year.

10:39 train from Worksop to Mansfield arriving at 11:11.

The Railway Inn at Mansfield is just a few minutes walk from the railway station and you can see the pub from the platform. Out of the station, walk across the Sports Direct car park and the pub is to the left on Station Street.

If you like a traditional pub you should feel at home in the Railway Inn. A comfortable, two roomed pub serving 4 changing real ales and good home cooked food and it also has a pleasant beer garden. Dogs are welcome but Saturday lunch times can be a bit hectic if The Stags are at home as they were this day but as the pub started to fill we left for the train.

Back to the railway station for the 12:12 train from Mansfield to Hucknall arriving at 12:31.

Leaving the Station Hotel until we came back for the train we headed for the Baker and Bear. From the railway station, along Station Road, right along the High Street and left onto Watnall Road and the Baker and Bear is on the left.

Formerly a gym, which moved upstairs, leaving a single roomed micro-pub. One side has tables with bar stools, whilst the other has a Chesterfield sofa. Industrial/urban decor complete with wood floor; bare bricks, original beams and supports from the 1874 building. Originally the site of the No1 Co-op in Hucknall, the side passageway was where horse and carts delivered. Harvest Pale and Titanic Plum Porter are the regular beers along with 2 changing guest beers.

Left along Watnall Road and then right onto Derbyshire Lane and the Beer Shack is on the left.

The Beer Shack boasts "it is tv free with an emphasis on conversation and good company". Two signs from closed pubs, the Flying Bedstead (from the nearby pub that closed shortly before the Beer Shack opened) and the Harrier, are displayed on the walls of this small pub that serves 5 changing real ales and up to 12 ciders plus a wide range of bottled beers. High quality pork pies are also sold to consume on the premises or to take away.

Continuing along Derbyshire Lane and then right onto Yorke Street and the Hideout stands on the far corner of the street.

The Hideout was formerly the Dog House and is described as a "smart city bar". The pub is not large but there is more space than appears from outside. 3 changing real ales on the bar and the pub serves a wide range of cocktails if that is your thing.

Along South Street and onto Baker Street and the Byron's Rest is on the right.

The Byron's Rest opened in February 2017 just in time for the Hucknall Beer Festival of that year. Deceptive in size, the pub is narrow but long, creating the illusion of separate drinking areas, a "snug" was added in 2018 and there is also a small beer garden. Regular beers are Black Iris, varies, and Titanic Plum Porter and 3 changing beers.

To the end of Baker Street, right onto Torkward Way, left onto Station Road and the Station Hotel stands back on the left at the next road junction.

The Station Hotel , a 19th century former Home brewery pub, now operated by the local Lincoln Green brewery since February 2017. Consists of a traditional bar and large comfortable piano lounge. The lounge wall displays a series of old Hucknall photographs, including one of the pub in the 1920/30's. A large number of hand pumps over the two bars dispensing either beer or cider, with, as you would expect, a great range of Lincoln Green beers. Nottingham CAMRA Pub of the Year in 2018.

A few minutes to the railway station for the 16.42 train to Newstead arriving at 16.47. The Pit Newstead is in the cricket pavilion on the playing field.

The Pit Newstead is the only pub in the village of Newstead. This micro pub offers 4 real ales on hand pull and 2 ciders. Situated right next to the pitch you can watch football or cricket depending on the season most Saturdays or Sundays. Quiz night Sundays. Dog friendly. Adjacent to the train station.

A short walk back for the 17.47 train to Worksop.

With 30 minutes to wait for the 19.14 train back to Retford it was over the bridge to Mallard.
